This study aims to identify the labour force destinations of participants in TAFE courses for 1980. It focuses on three groups: the foundation courses; pre-vocational courses; and Transition Education-funded Education Programs for Unemployed Youth (EPUY) (for 15-19 year olds). In order to develop a composite profile of former TAFE students, the following information was sought: biographical data (e.g. age, sex, education level); labour force data (e.g. length of time unemployed, job holding, job search methods); and the impact of the courses in terms of their stated objectives. A questionnaire was administered to all those who participated in these courses or programs during 1980, approximately six months after the completion of the last 1980 course or program. Chapter one discusses the extent to which youth unemployment is a problem in South Australia; chapter two describes the philosophies, goals and objectives of the foundation, pre-vocational and EPUY programs and courses for 1980; chapter three describes the methodology used as part of the survey; chapter four provides an analysis of the data gathered in the course of the survey; chapter five summarises and draws conclusions arising from the discussion and findings of chapter four; and the report concludes with future directions of the TAFE study.
