Strategies for employers for supporting female apprentices in non-traditional trades

This paper examines the difficulties experience by female apprentices once they actually start on the job and proposes strategies to anticipate, prevent, or deal with such difficulties. The contents are as follows: Introduction; Difficulties experienced by female apprentices (isolation; restriction on breadth of training; have to 'prove' themselves; practical jokes; offensive physical environment; sexual harassment); Strategies for supporting female apprentices (induction courses for apprentices; training and development for supervisors and co-workers; off-the-job training centres; industry support structures; appointment of support person or mentor; support from other women; consultation with unions; adoption of sexual harassment policy; design of equipment; liaison with TAFE).
