Learning skills: a review of the needs and services to university students

This report documents a nine-month research project that aimed to: (1) examine the effects of certain abilities, skills, attitudes, habits and needs of students at the University of Melbourne in relation to their effectiveness as tertiary learners; (2) describe some major difficulties and problems experienced by students in learning and studying and the kind of assistance they require; (3) report on the extent and effectiveness of various forms of assistance available in the university and particularly to describe and evaluate the Learning Skills Project (1978-79) at the Student Counselling Service; and (4) bring forward some recommendations concerning the provision of learning skills assistance for particular types of students (especially those in first year) who need help to overcome study problems.
