In March 1981, the New South Wales Department of Technical and Further Education initiated a review of all courses in New South Wales technical colleges that are undertaken by people employed as draughtsmen and tracers and those wishing to gain employment. The review committee decided that the first stage in the review would be a limited study to be jointly carried out by the Curriculum Services Division and the Schools of Engineering Trades and Mechanical Engineering. The aim of the study was to gather information on: (1) the extent to which present TAFE courses are satisfying the educational needs of the draughting area; (2) any specialist areas in which draughtsmen are in short supply; (3) need and demand for further courses; (4) the mix of draughting and technical skills and knowledge required by draughtsmen; (5) the courses in which draughting apprentices and trainees enrol; and (6) the areas of industry which employ apprentices. This report outlines the findings of the above limited study. For the purpose of the study the term 'draughtsman' is taken to include both male and female workers.
