Training and competitiveness

The UK has fewer skilled and qualified people than its best international competitors. Without adequate training for those already in employment, the country's competitiveness in international trade will be undermined. The book addresses this problem and offers suggestions for its solution in a collection of papers presented at a National Economic Development Office Policy seminar. The papers are as follows: Preface / Walter Eltis; Introduction / John Cassels; Training and competitiveness / John Stevens, Tim Walsh; Innovation in training creates a competitive edge / Peter D. Wickens; Integrating the training function with the business / Jim Burrell; Corporate strategy and training / Chris Hendry; Training in the United States: the state of play and future directions / Sue Berryman; Training efforts and industrial efficiency in West Germany / Karin Wagner; Issues of training strategy in British manufacturing / Adrian Campbell; Training research in France and West Germany: its role in the development of training / Ron Johnson; Links between industry and higher education / Cari Loder; Individuals, human resources and markets / Robert M. Lindley; Promoting careership through working life / John Cridland; Skills towards 2000 / Ron Todd.
