Industry, government and the Training Commission in the United Kingdom (UK) devote considerable resources to vocational education and training, including activities ranging from developing new forms of open learning to researching the consequences of changing technology for skills. But the great range of new development programmes, and the bewildering variety of agencies involved in research and development (R&D) has created its own problems, with individuals, employers, providers and policy-makers all finding it difficult to keep abreast of the changing scene. The Policy Studies Institute has carried out a comprehensive review, and this report puts forward recommendations for improving the disssemination of R&D on the subject of VET. These include more systematic efforts to get new developments incorporated into teacher training, major efforts to increase and systematise the use of computer databases, and the setting up of new specialist units, including a new National Centre for Information Technology.
