In 1978, the Technical Education Division of the Education department of Western Australia funded an independent survey of the teaching functions and other responsibilities of TAFE teachers in Western Australia. The primary focus of the study was on those aspects of TAFE teaching that were likely to have implications for a review and possible redirection of initial training provisions. The main report provides the terms of reference and the background to the project, discusses the overall design and sampling strategies used in the study, examines the nature and representativeness of the sample vis a vis characteristics of the overall population of TAFE teacher, presents the data on TAFE teaching and associated aspects of the teachers' work and reviews the findings and discusses possible direction for future research. The contents of the main report are: Origins and structure of the project; Project design, instrumentation and analysis; Analysis of sampling adequacy; Profile of a full working day; Profile of a recent typical lesson; Teaching practices and strategies; Non-teaching activities; Student characteristics; Interviews with TAFE teachers; Satisfaction and dissatisfactions of TAFE teachers; Personal impressions of TAFE teaching; Synthesis - the teacher and teaching. Included as appendices are questionnaires, the interview letter, the original brief for the study, and additional data tables.
