Transition from school to work in the Australian metals and engineering industry

This study attempted to 'research and define problems in the transition from school to work in the Australian metals and engineering industry'. It examined three levels of activity: (1) young peoples' ideas about the metals trades with particular emphasis on their understanding of the industry and their career guidance; (2) employers' perceptions of young people and the apprenticeship system; and (3) the role of the education system in the broad sense and the contribution of various government bodies to the transition from school to work. Particular attention was given to the importance of career counselling in schools, the kinds of projects initiated in the technical education sector, and the general response of government to the problem of youth unemployment. The report contains four sections: a summary of the findings of the study, including a brief outline of the major problems identified; the major conclusions drawn from the study; state by state activities (covering Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, and Queensland); and the results of surveys of employers, careers teachers, and young people.
