This report documents and analyses one example of a successful rural vocational training scheme. The Master Craftsmen Learning Scheme (MCLS) was introduced to rehabilitate a wide and varied range of traditional trades and crafts in Sri Lanka. Master craftsmen in rural areas are appointed to train young people in crafts that are relevant to rural life and employment. The scheme has transferred skills and conserved crafts in the country with the added bonus of leading to livelihood activities and self-reliance for participants. The program appears to have potential for further improvement and expansion.
