This report provides an overview of the Dutch vocational education system. Although the Dutch system does not distinguish between the two, the report describes the system in terms of initial vocational training (IVT) and continuing vocational training (CVT). Part one, 'Vocational education: the Dutch system and policy', contains the following chapters: The Dutch educational system; Overview of the most important developments in IVT and CVT; Trends in the development of the training systems and IVT and CVT policy. Part two, 'The role of the social partners in legislation' contains: The role of the social partners in initial vocational training; The role of the social partners in continuing vocational training; Laws and regulations concerning continuing vocational training. Part three, 'Vocational education expenditures', contains: Initial vocational training expenditures; Continuing vocational training expenditures; Initial and continuing vocational training expenditures as part of gross domestic product. Part four, 'Providers of vocational education, access and participation', contains: Providers of initial vocational training; Entry requirements for initial vocational training; Facilities in initial vocational training for special target groups; Initial vocational training participation; Providers of continuing vocational training; Participation in continuing vocational training. Part five, 'Other important aspects of vocational education in the Netherlands', contains: Monitoring quality in vocational education; Certification and recognition of the qualifications for which vocational training acts as a preparation; Research and development and policy with regard to IVT and CVT; Determining content and planning in education. Appendices include: The structure of senior secondary vocational education; The Higher Vocational Education (HBO) structure: an overview of the training paths for each sector; Overview of the SEDOC [a European system to classify the level of complexity of occupations] levels.
