This chapter presents a history and review of volunteerism in adult literacy in the USA. Volunteers still make a significant contribution towards the provision of educational services to adult learners as tutors and in other roles. Their work is controversial and the authors identify some of the main issues associated with the use of volunteers in adult literacy. It is concluded that the role and contribution of volunteers in this field requires further research to determine their effectiveness in both teaching and other supporting roles.
