United Kingdom: skills development for the twenty-first century

In order to support the integration of sustainable development (SD) in the mainstream vocational education and training (VET) system in the UK, the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) initiated a research program comprised of a series of small projects involving providers and employers in three areas: agriculture, construction and food processing and based on the principle that this new concept will progress more effectively in the sector if it is rooted in the policy imperatives and practices that institutioners and practitioners are responding to in their day-to-day work. This paper first considers the prevailing policy context for VET and then describes the research program. This study found that in several institutions the language and practice of SD is implicit but not yet explicit, which is identified as an issue for the learning and skills sector. The paper identified skill trends that are going to be crucial to making SD meaningful and recommends specific areas for further investigation.
