This book aims to help organisations in both public and private sectors, to prepare for issues arising from the ageing of the workforce and the changing nature of the workplace. It comprises contributions from nationally recognised experts, identifying the most crucial issues facing American society as it prepares for an increasingly ageing workforce. Issues identified include: recruiting and retaining older workers; training older workers; career development for older workers; enhancing intergenerational relations; health and older workers; pensions and older workers; and redefining retirement. Each issue is addressed from two perspectives, those of leaders in the field and of academics from fields such as psychology, sociology and law. Recommendations are proposed for enhancing individual and organisational performance with an ageing workforce. The editors provide a brief synthesis at the end of each part, which support the synthesis and strategies presented in the final chapter of the book. Part one, 'Prologue', details the methodology used to select the issues that form the chapters of the book and their authors. Part two, 'Setting the stage', provides the context and contains the following chapters: The workforce of tomorrow / Howard N. Fullerton (p. 14-25); The workplace of tomorrow / Dave Patel (p. 26-33). Part three, 'Critical issues', contains the chapters for each of the seven identified issues. Issue one, 'Recruiting and retaining older workers', contains: Academic perspectives on recruiting and retaining older workers / Mary Anne Taylor, Kenneth S. Shultz, and Dennis Doverspike (p. 43-50); Effective strategies for recruiting and retaining older workers / Catherine D. Fyock (p. 51-59). Simpson (p. 62-69); Effective strategies for training older workers / Suzanne Dunn (p. 70-78). Sterns (p. 81-91); Partnering career development and human resources / Martha M. Russell, Roemer M. S. Visser (p. 92-101). Issue four, 'Enhancing intergenerational relations', contains: Intergenerational issues inside the organization / Lisa M.
