The geography of poor skills and access to work

This report analyses statistics from the Census in the context of important changes in the industrial and occupational profile of employment, and the location of jobs, in Great Britain. The report: outlines key features of labour market restructuring and the increased importance of skills; describes the range of jobs and skills needed, using information on occupations and qualifications; examines who works where, and who is not working; and explores geographical distributions of jobs and workers alongside each other to provide insights into the extent of spatial match and mismatch. Concluding with policy implications and possible avenues for future research, the report finds that where people live matters most for those with poor skills. They have fewer opportunities and face more constraints in the labour market: the quantity and quality of jobs available is of particular importance to them.
