- Generic numeracies of the shop floor: a numeracy for decision making
-
This paper proposes a way of looking at the learning and practice of numeracy in the workplace, based on research in three small light metal engineering companies in Victoria. The major aim of the research was to assess, by focusing on numeracy, what people do at work, how they learn to do it, and under what conditions. The usefulness of mathematics and/or numeracy was applied primarily to the process of decision-making and problem solving in the workplace.

- 'Invention within limits': numeracy practices of young unemployed people
-
This article outlines the Numeracy in Practice Project, coordinated by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA), which arose from concerns regarding how and what to teach the increasing numbers of young unemployed people attending adult numeracy classes. The project considered what sort of mathematics was relevant to this new population of students, and what strategies numeracy teachers may need to develop to enable them to teach effectively. The data drawn from the research is examined from both a social and mathematical perspective, and looks particularly at the teaching and understanding of particular mathematical activities like calculating, measuring and using fractions, and also at those numerical practices used in everyday life, such as managing money, negotiating transport and interacting with bureaucracies.
