This chapter discusses distance education, highlighting the University of South Africa (Unisa) as an open and distance learning institution. In the first section a case study describing an encounter with a sociology student is presented. It is used to support the view expressed in the second section that it is important for lecturers to be able to guide, interact, communicate with and enter into dialogue with their students in the distance education system.
