This chapter provides a brief overview of the types of literacy and basic educational programs available in Bangladesh, including a historical perspective and a description of current programs. The chapter suggests that the limited outreach of current programs could be improved and expanded by the use of open and distance learning methods and practices. The chapter concludes with a proposed structure for large-scale delivery using distance education methods, a curriculum for training educators and recommendations for moving from traditional training methods to distance education methods.
