Methods of distance education for training adult educators in South Africa

This chapter examines the role of distance education in the training of grassroots workers in South Africa. It offers a brief background to education in the South African context, highlighting the need for adult basic education and considering the policies which inform its delivery in South Africa. A case study of the training of adult educators by the University of South Africa's Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) Institute is described, followed by discussion of methods of delivery of distance education. The chapter ends with a discussion of ways the ABET Institute has used its networks of tutors and graduate students to assist the South African National Department of Education with implementation of its South African Literacy Campaign.
