This chapter examines some of the main approaches to the training of grassroots workers in India so that they can make a contribution to the adult education and literacy programs targeting the 300 million adults in need of basic education. Open and distance learning are considered as important methods of delivery of adult basic education programs although use of multimedia technology has not been very successful due to financial and technological constraints.
