Distance education has established its relevance and efficiency across the globe. Development and expansion of distance education/learning is a worldwide phenomenon. Distance education is flexible in nature and able to cater to the needs of the innumerable that could not be blessed with the education provided in conventional temples of learning. Education is going through a transformation in a fundamental sense. Learning needs are augmenting knowledge transfer and exchange and new ways of resource mobilization are being explored. Rapid developments in technology, involving the convergence of telecommunications, computers and micro electronics, and the emergence of the Internet have revolutionized both the speed and nature of communications. These new information and communications technologies have not only facilitated the globalisation of society and economy, but have also made a major impact on education, particularly distance education. In today's educational scenario, competitive advantage is gained more often by knowledge than by physical assets. Acquiring and disseminating information has become critical for imparting education. The use of networked technologies to deliver learning to learners, otherwise known as e-learning, is growing beyond buzzword status in the business world. Its popularity is increasing due to the low cost, on-demand training features. In addition, e-learning is attractive to open universities that are dealing with distance education of a global or more geographically dispersed workforce.
