This paper is based on research built on the author's literature review, prepared for a project about the conceptualisation of the learning society in Hungary. She suggests that the current goal in Hungary is to build a learning society by teaching individuals how to avail themselves of self-education. Different work-organisational forms with different levels of labour quality, different levels of training requirements and different levels of in-company training systems exist side by side in the economy. The connection between the economy and the education system is complex, depending on the concrete work-organisational forms of the companies. Besides regional differences, there are obvious differences between social layers in society. There is a vital need to improve the access of socially excluded people to education and learning. Some 'critics' draw attention to the tensions and potential risks information technology and learning society can generate in the society.
