On-line learning: the lecturer experience: a survey report

This document reports on the outcomes of a NATFHE survey of further education (FE) and higher education (HE) lecturers about their experiences of online learning, particularly the impact on their working life in terms of balance of work, overall workload, and access to training. The focus was on 'blended learning' rather than distance learning provision where both teachers and students are 'geared up' for an overall online approach. The aim was to investigate the degree of take-up amongst lecturers, their experiences and their views. The survey was administered in January 2003 and 532 individuals responded. It is likely that there was a disproportionate response from those involved in online learning. Key issues raised in the survey included: a lack of consultation with staff over effective forms of support and training for online learning; many staff are in the development stages of using online learning and are still working out how to address difficulties; there isn't always an institutional strategy for using online learning; and there appears to be considerable unplanned development of online learning resulting in staff working in isolation, 'reinventing the wheel', and potentially not making the best use of the information technology (IT).
