The Alcoa group in Australia is involved in the mining, refining, smelting and rolling of aluminium and is managed by the parent company, Alcoa Inc, in the USA. The company views diversity as one of the key enablers towards building success into the future. To achieve its strategic goals, Alcoa believes that it must attract and retain talented employees, maintain its competitive edge through the creative capacity of those employees, and establish a work environment and organisational culture where creativity can flourish. The company recognises that valuing and encouraging diversity is crucial to achieving this. This brief case study looks at diversity in action within the Australian group. It provides information about the company in Australia and where diversity fits within Alcoa/Kaal's vision and values. It describes how diversity is implemented in the company through embedding diversity into the workplace, longer term programs, and supporting the work-life balance. The case study concludes by outlining how the benefits of diversity are measured and what are seen as future challenges for the company's diversity management program.
