This paper comments on the projected ageing of the populations of OECD countries and the consequences this has for labour markets, focusing on the fact that older workers will be required to remain active in the workforce for a longer period of time. The benefits of this include an increase in employment rates and less pressure on pension systems. Yet, the paper also emphasises the problems which could arise along with these developments, such as a lessening of the standard of living for older people, and a need to change attitudes towards the older workforce and introduce proactive policies for boosting training, productivity and decency of work for the older workforce. The paper concludes with some policy recommendations, and presents some former International Labour Organization (ILO) activities in the field.
