Tax, education and workplace relations reform needed to bolster investment

‘ACCI review’, published monthly, provides a means to communicate Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) policy concerns to the Government, the public service, the media and the general public. This article highlights ACCI’s 2005 pre-budget submission in which it called on the Australian government to initiate economic reform in areas of taxation, workplace relations and education and skills development. A major issue facing Australian businesses is skill shortages and the article suggests ways of addressing this issue: the full implementation of User Choice; employer-led skills and training activity and policy; and the integration of post-compulsory education and training options. The article also recommends that Government initiatives and programs that address skill shortages be maintained and extended.
