The author considers the following questions: What exactly happens during e-learning? What problems confront the Internet teacher? Is virtual learning really self-directed - and if so why is that successful? The study is part of a comprehensive research overview and provides qualitative results of virtual learning processes. The findings suggest that virtual learning has enormous potential but in order for this potential to be realised, expert moderating is necessary. Additional themes include: distribution and forms of virtual learning; state-of-the art learning theory through scientific and theoretical analysis; overview of existing qualitative studies; and individual analysis of subjective motivation and resistance.
