Working with experience: developing an Individual Learning Audit Process to assist mature age unemployed job seekers make productive learning choices

In May 2003, Adult Learning Australia undertook a feasibility study to explore the potential for the development of an 'Individual Learning Audit Process', a tool which would help mature age unemployed job seekers. An Individual Learning Audit Process would assist mature age job seekers in undertaking further training by encouraging them to better understand and articulate their learning styles. The process requires careful consideration of learning preferences, of barriers to formal learning activity, and the identification of the potential to develop new skills or knowledge. The feasability study documented in this paper had three aims: to evaluate the efficacy of developing a structured Individual Learning Audit Process for use in assisting mature age unemployed job seekers; to explore what would be required in the implementation of an Individual Learning Audit Process as part of the Job Network processes; and to recommend how to proceed. Key findings from the paper showed: that while the Process has potential, the extent of its effectiveness will be limited by discrimination against mature age unemployed job seekers, and by existing attitudes towards training programs existing outside of formal structures; that the Job Network's focus on speed and on accredited learning may reduce the value of the Individual Learning Audit Process within that context; and that employers need to be aware of the positive features of employing mature persons.
