This report describes a research project conducted by the Centre for Community Welfare Training (CCWT), under the funding of Adult Learning Australia (ALA), involving community service workers in the far west of New South Wales (NSW). Along with broader research, the study also incorporated the piloting of a flexible learning program which involved a combination of face-to-face, self directed and virtual classroom learning components. The program sought to test the usefulness of each component, while also considering how suitable they were as a means of training community service workers in the area of communication skill development. This project was prompted by a growing interest in flexible learning, and an awareness of the difficulties community service workers in regional NSW have in accessing traditional training, mostly due to geographic isolation. The findings of the project indicate that participants in the study far prefered the face-to-face training or blended approach over the virtual classroom component, while the self paced component also received a favourable response. Other findings included: for flexible learning to be successful, workers need workplace support, such as allocated learning time and appropriate resources; and often, workers are having to go back and learn how to learn all over again.
