It is claimed that Australians without a TAFE or university education are twice as likely to become unemployed than Australians with a qualification. In an effort to increase opportunities for Australians and the nation in general, the Australian Labor Party (ALP), launched a new education policy in 2003. In it, the authors claim they will improve early education programs, provide better funded, more affordable schools, and increase the number of places in universities and TAFEs. Within the policy there are various sections dedicated to: Australia's universities and TAFEs in crisis; Sharing the benefits of our TAFEs and universities; Expanding TAFE and university opportunities; Fair access and affordable university education; Relieving the financial pressure on students and new graduates; Skilling Australia and national skill shortages; Increasing equity in university access and participation; providing vision, investment and direction for a world-class Australian university system; Securing the foundations for high standards and improved quality; Costings.
