This guide book examines current methods of training workers in industry, and the role trainers play in the process. Of special interest is the concept of 'training the trainer', particularly those interacting with a multilingual workforce. A program conducted by the Workplace Communication Service is described in which a model was examined for training the trainers of NESB (non-English speaking background) trainees. The program was conducted at Ford Motor Company with Vehicle Industry Certificate (VIC) trainers. The aim of the program was to develop the skills of trainers in responding to the language and literacy needs of their trainees, and to facilitate the transfer of skills between trainers and teachers. The model proved successful and suggestions for following the program are given, which include: that teachers and trainers share the same class; that the trainers spend a short period in a class where English as a second language (ESL) skills are amplified; and that the program be incorporated into Adult Migrant English services to industry. Session notes, samples of material used on the program, and activity sheets are also included.
