Training journal, September 2004

'Training journal' provides current and practical information for those involved in workplace learning, training and development in the UK. This issue contains the following feature articles: 'No bars on learning' by Mike Levy (p. 18-21), which investigates the state of education and training in UK prisons, revealing that good work in this area is often hampered by the bureaucracy of prison life and the resistant attitudes of some inmates and prison officers; 'Essentials of training design: part 9: designing memorable training' by David Cotton (p. 22-27), which presents several practical ideas for making training memorable and thus more effective; 'The strategic trainer: developing strategy skills for the 21st century' by Sarah Cook (p. 30-32, 34-36), which provides an introduction to corporate strategy including the language of strategy, an exploration of key strategic models, and strategy and change; 'Flexible working: achieving a work/life balance' by David Harris (p. 40-43), which outlines new legislation that provides a series of family-friendly rights for employees and appears to have been successful in enabling working parents to achieve a greater work/life balance; 'From trainer to learning consultant: an evolution' by Paul Kearns (p. 60-64), which looks at how a learning consultant gets business results from learning solutions. This issue has 'Focus on sales and customer service' which contains two articles: Customer service excellence: are you delivering? / Martin Shervington (p. 48-51); Can't sell or won't sell / Adrian Priddle (p. 52-54, 56).
