The Australian government’s ‘Intergenerational report 2002-03’ (indexed at TD/TNC 69.85) projects that over the next 40 years, the growth of the country’s workforce population aged 15 to 64 is expected to slow to almost zero, while its population of those over 65 years will almost double. This document outlines some of the key issues that will need to be considered over the next few years if Australia is to meet the challenge of an ageing population. They are: improving the capacity for work by ensuring that the education system provides adequate and relevant training to workers; better incentives to stay in the workforce; and greater flexibility in work options.
