'Engaging industry with flexible learning' is a research project that included identifying potential flexible learning strategies and activities that could be undertaken to meet the needs of industry. It was undertaken to assist the Flexible Learning Advisory Group (FLAG) strengthen the engagement of industry clients with the Australian Flexible Learning (AFL) Framework. The objectives of the project were to identify: industry's knowledge and familiarity with flexible learning; potential industry partnerships for FLAG to enhance the take-up of flexible learning in industry; and strategies for FLAG to engage more effectively in 2004 and beyond. This report presents the key findings of the project which will be used to inform FLAG's planning for 2004 and beyond. The findings suggest that: the uptake of flexible learning in large and medium organisations is significant, but there is no evidence that small organisations are delivering training flexibly; most training delivered flexibly in industry is not linked to nationally recognised qualifications; and the major reasons for introducing flexible learning are to reduce training costs and improve access to and quality of training. Challenges and issues in implementing flexible learning include: resistance to change; technology and bandwidth issues; the skills levels of learning and development staff; the computer literacy and skills of learners; and poor instructional design leading to high levels of dissatisfaction from learners. The report also includes a number of recommendations and concludes that given the successes experienced by organisations and despite the concerns that exist about flexible learning, the Framework, if implemented appropriately, can provide a sound platform to support and engage industry in flexible learning in Australia.
