This article discusses a program called 'Step into voluntary work' which aims to support women who wish to become volunteers and to provide accredited training. The program shows that credentialed training outcomes are possible for people with limited English language proficiency and that voluntary work is an important pathway to civic life. It highlights recent research (indexed at TD/TNC 78.11) which shows that many people from a language other than English background consider it possible to complete vocational training programs if systematic and integrated language support is provided as part of the training program.
