The importance of cross-cultural skills in a global labour market

This paper is taken from the ninth group session on Wednesday 24 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. Acquiring skills that enable the individual to perform effectively in unfamiliar cultures necessitates training that challenges the individual's assumptions and fosters an open mind. Cross-cultural skills are increasingly viewed as a necessity in global organisations. The paper uses an American and Japanese case study to illustrate intercultural differences. A list of knowledge requirements for those involved in intercultural business is provided to encapsulate the necessary components of cross-cultural skills.
