This paper is taken from the seventh group session on Wednesday 24 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. This paper examines the importance of education and training in maintaining the employability of workers facing the challenges of globalisation. Focusing on the South African situation, the author highlights government initiatives contributing to the development of education and training. The role of professional associations in the professional development of workers is also discussed. Lifelong learning equips the worker with the knowledge, skills and values necessary for continued employment.
