- E-learning: has the bubble burst and just what is it good for?
-
This paper is taken from the plenary session on Wednesday 24 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. This paper reports on research conducted in the United Kingdom for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, into the use of electronic learning in training. The author suggests that e-learning has not delivered the training developments that were initially forecasted. Survey results indicate that less than one third of respondents utilise e-learning in the provision of training, and that e-learning is restricted to specific learning groups and activities. The author examines the effectiveness of e-learning processes. E-learning is useful in dissemination of hard knowledge and skills, but is less likely to be effective in transmitting tacit knowledge and as a replacement for informal workplace learning.
