This paper is taken from the sixth group session on Tuesday 23 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. The paper reports on research undertaken for South Africa's Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) on quality systems in 10 countries. The research focused on the suitability of the quality systems for adoption by education and training providers in South Africa, following legislative requirements for education and training quality management. The following quality management systems are analysed: (1) Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award; (2) European Quality Management Award; (3) Australian Quality Award; (4) the Koalaty Kid program; (5) the Deming Prize; (6) the ISO 9000/2000 Quality Management Code of Practice; (7) Investors in People; (8) the South African Excellence Model; (9) the Balanced Business Scorecard; and (10) the Scottish Quality Management System. The paper reports on findings of the research and includes guidelines for a Quality Management System Manual.
