This paper is taken from the plenary session on Tuesday 23 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. This paper examines an action-orientated approach to the teaching and learning processes. Such an approach may prepare the student for today's dynamic workplace. Independent action in the workplace is fostered by independent action during education and training. In this paper the author describes action learning methods, including the use of a key text or other self-study material, and the project method.
