This paper is taken from the fifth group session on Monday 22 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. In 1988 the Industrial and Vocational Training Board (IVTB) of Mauritius was developed to oversee the provision of technical and vocational training. Training institutions are legally required to be registered with the IVTB, allowing for the quality of training to be monitored. This paper provides data which describe the current situation of training provision in Mauritius, and detail the financial aspects of the training system. The financing of training in Mauritius is a joint effort between public and private sectors. Since 1989 a training grant scheme has contributed to training investments. The author describes funding arrangements and concludes with the country's latest funding initiative, the development of a National Training Fund.
