This paper is taken from the second group session on Monday 22 July 2002 at the International Vocational Education and Training Organisation (IVETA) Conference. The paper reviews recent developments in the English education system, and the Labour government's approaches to improving educational standards, and vocational education and training (VET) opportunities. The author investigates vocationally orientated General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) programs, and examines in detail the vocational GCSEs in business, and leisure and tourism. The author discusses the validity of the new programs, and highlights a number of questions about the programs that remain to be answered.
