Competencies that count: strategies for assessing high-performance skills

High performance skills such as problem-solving, information management, communication and negotiation skills, have become increasingly important to successful secondary, postsecondary and workplace education. This guide describes the various strategies used by schools and employers to assess such high-performance competencies. It begins with a brief analysis of the importance of assessing these skills in the context of the contemporary standards environment in education and key trends in the economy. The strategies include those originating in high schools, those designed by companies to identify quality entry-level employees, and those emerging from collaborations between schools, community-based organisations and businesses. Categories of assessment include: on-demand, multiple choice or short answer tests; self-assessments; competency assessment in the workplace; and competency assessment in adult education settings.
