The Australian Council of Deans of Education (ACDE) is the peak organisation representing the deans of faculties of education and heads of schools of education in Australian universities and other higher education institutions. In this charter, the ACDE argues that, despite what politicians say about education, it is perceived by them as a cost rather than an investment. This attitude contrasts dramatically with the current belief in leading nations that economic success depends largely on a highly educated and skilled workforce. The first section of the charter examines the state of education and compares it with the situation internationally. The conclusion is that the Australian education system is not prepared to meet the demands of the future and will require substantial qualitative change and greater public investment. The charter proposes that Australian education institutions need to foster new learning, and, in many cases, require radical reconceptualisation. Supported by over 60 graphs and tables, it puts forward eight propositions to shape the future environment of learning, covering every sector from preschool to adult education. Each proposition is supported by an action agenda that includes specific recommendations.
