Employability skills.

This document reports on research initiated by the Association of Independent Schools of Victoria (AISV) to explore the potential and actual relationships between the Employability Skills Framework (ESF), the Mayer Key Competencies, the Curriculum Standards Framework (CSF), and other curriculum developments in Australia in order to recommend how these skill frameworks can be incorporated into existing teaching practice. The research involved a literature review of existing framework initiatives, mapping of Mayer Key Competencies against equivalent Employability Skills, and a survey of AISV member schools offering Victorian Certificate of Education vocational education and training in schools (VCE VET in schools). The research revealed considerable similarity between the Key Competencies and the ESF. It also revealed that schools around Australia are already explicity teaching or embedding generic employability skills within existing secondary education programs. Although schools are very conscious of the need to develop students' generic skills there is little evidence that these skills are formally assessed unless they are part of a formal VET program. Issues for teaching practice include professional development to ensure that pedagogy serves the underpinning competencies and skills defined in curriculum frameworks, and assessment.
