This report examines the combined impact of age and gender, or 'gendered ageism', on the job opportunities of older women. Drawing on 90 interviews conducted during 1995-96 with older women seeking employment, the report examines the problems and the discrimination confronting older women, and the experiences of newly arrived migrants and Aboriginal women. An earlier study of the labour market experiences of older workers (indexed at TD/TNC 78.146) found that women appeared to suffer from age discrimination at an earlier age but found less difficulty in returning to the workforce, being more prepared to accept lower paid/lower status jobs than those they originally left, and to accept part-time work. The current study enabled the exploration of a wider range of situations. A range of case histories are summarised and findings are discussed in relation to ageism, immigrants, Indigenous women, participation in labour market training programs, and work and family issues. The research concluded that despite the discouragement of the age barriers, the respondents displayed continuing determination to secure employment and, once employed, were able to cope with the work and learn new skills.
