In the USA, community colleges serve a higher percentage of students with disabilities than any other higher education sector. Disabilities include learning disabilities, mobility or orthopaedic impairments, health impairments, mental illness and emotional disturbance as well as hearing, visual and speech/language impairments. This article describes legal requirements that postsecondary institutions must comply with in accommodating these students. It includes a discussion of the Fourteenth Amendment, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Implications of these for community colleges are clarified.
