Room to move: spaces for learning

Learning and space have intimate associations (Jamieson, Fisher, Gilding, Taylor, & Trevitt, 2000). Indeed much has been written about how space and time are integral to understanding social relations (eg., Edwards & Clarke, 2002; Nespor, 1994) and understanding learning in workplaces (O’Toole, 2001). This paper draws on a research study that is exploring everyday learning at work. It builds on earlier outcomes of the study that focused on networking and the naming of learning at work by turning to those spaces and times where 'social' and 'work' overlap: meal breaks in tearoom, and/or cafes frequented by workers, for example. These spaces are not so work orientated that they can be described as 'workspaces', nor are they entirely social. The nexus of the social and work, of being a worker and a social creature, of engaging in legitimate work and socialising are put forward as rich expanses for everyday learning. This paper draws on interview and observational data from four work sites within one organisation. It undertakes an exploration of the intersection of space, time and informal learning with regard to the social/work spaces located at work.
