Teaching contexts and role perceptions and actions for first-year teachers

Relatively little research attention has been directed towards understanding the teaching context and its impact on teaching and learning outcomes. The teaching and learning environment is composed of several contexts including the classroom, the institution, and wider society (Staton, 1999). The present study focuses on how teachers perceive and carry out their role with first-year students. Thematic analysis of the interview transcripts indicated three major themes, of which framework for first-year teaching (concern for transition and adjustment and organisational and political frame) is the focus in this paper. Implications for the teaching role, teaching and learning contexts, and cultural change are discussed.
