This paper makes use of cultural-historical activity theory to formulate criteria for the assessment of learning outcomes. These criteria are applied to an analysis of two case studies involving the teaching of tertiary level courses. Evidence demonstrated that high quality learning outcomes were achieved in each of these instances.
