The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is an initiative to cater for student diversity and the empowerment of Year 11 and 12 students. The program aims to strengthen student pathways between school and further education or employment. The focus is on vocational rather than academic pathways. This paper outlines the implementation of the VCAL and presents some findings from an evaluation of the program. Development needs of the VCAL are listed. Support from students and other individuals involved indicate the value and importance of the VCAL in meeting secondary students' vocationally oriented education needs.
